GM’s Electric Military Concept Vehicle (EMCV): A Militarized GMC Hummer EV
General Motors Defense has unveiled the Electric Military Concept Vehicle (EMCV), a modified version of the electric GMC Hummer EV designed for military use. The EMCV features several modifications to suit the needs of the military, offering a powerful and silent electric vehicle option. With its roots in the civilian Hummer, this military vehicle showcases how electric technology developed for consumer use can be adapted for military applications.
EMCV Specifications
Underneath its military green exterior, the EMCV shares the same chassis and electric propulsion system as the GMC Hummer EV. It boasts three electric motors capable of producing a combined output of 1,000 horsepower and a staggering 11,500 pound-feet of torque. The vehicle is equipped with a massive 212-kilowatt-hour (205 kWh usable) double-stacked Ultium battery pack, providing an impressive range of up to 300 miles on a full charge. Additionally, a 12-kW diesel-powered generator is integrated for limited on-the-go charging.
Military Features and Modifications
Inside the EMCV, the focus is on functionality rather than passenger comfort. The vehicle features a tubular roll cage to protect the driver and five passengers in case of a rollover. Basic seatbelts are provided, but there are no luxurious amenities found in the civilian version of the GMC Hummer EV. The standard air suspension system is replaced with Fox performance shocks, and the braking system receives a heavy-duty upgrade. Enhanced approach and departure angles improve off-road mobility, complemented by 37-inch tires. The vehicle also includes a 46-inch gun ring and a swing side-arm mount.
Purpose and Future Prospects
The EMCV was developed specifically for the Army’s Electric Light Reconnaissance Vehicle (eLRV) program. Its purpose is to showcase the potential capabilities of electric vehicles for military applications and initiate discussions on future requirements. General Motors Defense aims to demonstrate different sizes and customization options to assist in shaping the Army’s future vehicle needs.
While it is unlikely that the militarized Hummer EV-based EMCV will be available for civilian purchase, its existence highlights the adaptability of electric vehicle technology for military purposes.
